iPhone X and iPhone Xs difference
After many leaks and rumors from various sources about the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Finally, Apple has announced 3 new iPhones, all with A12 Bionic processor. If you compare iPhone X and iPhone Xs, there is almost no difference between these phones. It has the same sandwiched glass chassis, so you probably should protect your iPhone Xs. But the spotlight this year goes to iPhone Xs Max. The biggest screen and battery ever on an iPhone. Since Apple decided to discontinue iPhone X, they also announced iPhone Xr for the “not so” cheapest iPhone. I think part of their decision to discontinue iPhone X is because of the pricing. Many people will choose to upgrade to iPhone X instead of iPhone Xs, since it is almost identical. But what makes iPhone Xs and Xs Max special.
iPhone Xs and Xs Max gets the first 7nm processor in the industry
The S treatment from Apple this year focuses on processor and camera. They upgraded to 7nm A12 Bionic processor, the first in the industry to use this processor. The name A12 Bionic has similarity with A11 Bionic because they use the same architecture. It has 6 cores with 4 efficiency cores and 2 performance cores. But with upgraded neural engine cores for faster machine learning task. A12 Bionic has 8 neural engine cores compared to A11 Bionic that only has 2 cores. Apple also touts that it can compute 5 trillion operations compared to 600 billion for the last generation neural engine cores. Smaller footprint processor usually associated with better battery life or more performance. Apple chooses to go better battery life route since the benchmark result from iPhone Xs does not show much different than the iPhone X. Apple also runs its own in-house GPU with additional 1 core from the last-gen becomes 4 GPU cores combined with increased RAM to 4GB of RAM for iPhone Xs and Xs Max.
Enhanced computational photography and videography on the new iPhones
Because of the integration between Image Signal Processor (ISP) with A12 Bionic neural engine processor, now Apple has better camera. Apple calls it the new era of computational photography. iPhone Xs now has Smart HDR that actually just captures more image to have better dynamic range. Portrait mode has been enhanced also, now you can control the depth of field level after you took the portrait picture to get more realistic results. I hope iPhone X can get this feature also via iOS 12 update since they actually have the same processor architecture, just less powerful neural engine cores.
Apple also has enhanced the videography for iPhone Xs. Now it can capture 4K video with stereo sound recording, finally. Maybe most iPhone users do not realize that they still record video in mono sound, but this feature has been on Android for a long time now. Not only it records stereo sound. Apple has enhanced the speaker on iPhone Xs to have wider sound separation. So it will sound better if you play with the new iPhone. The smart HDR also comes to video but only up to 30fps.
The front-facing camera that is in charge of FaceID also just improved. They now have new sensor but still on 7MP camera. Apple said this new sensor combined with faster secure enclave will result in faster FaceID authentication. But don’t get your hopes up too much since it is not a major improvement. In Apple website, it is also mentioned that it has new video stabilization which I will test later after I get the phone on my hand.

iPhone Xs price in SEA (Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand)
st the same price as the iPhone X. So we are expecting the same pricing elsewhere in SEA also. For the iPhone Xs Max, it starts from S$1,790 that means almost IDR 20,000,0000 in Indonesia and THB 48,000 in Thailand. This is too expensive. You can buy a lot of things with that. If you have an iPhone X, I don’t think you should upgrade to the new iPhone except if you have spare money and want bigger screen size.
