Sony Xperia XZ3 : Sony’s comeback?

Overview

Sony has been quite in a slum for some time right now. They have tried everything they could but it is yielding any results. I am the one who is actually quite impressed with Sony’s approach to Android for a long time. They keep everything simple, instead of giving a ton of features that probably ate your storage and you just turn it off anyway. However, they announced the new Xperia XZ3 in this year’s IFA with tons of specification that we are hoping for a long time.

Xperia XZ3 combining Toughness & Beauty

Xperia XZ3 design

Sony still continuing their monolith design but this year they improved it. The screen now has a curved design which adds some futuristic looks to the phone, thanks to the OLED display. As you know, the design has been quite controversial with the new Xperia XZ2, it is too bulky for 2018 phone. They also pushed the top and bottom bezel too, so it becomes more narrow. However, the fingerprint placement on the back of the phone still a bit off. You will get some time to get used to with it and you may smudge your camera a lot in the process. I also give Sony some good points for not following the notchy trends from Apple, but still keeping the dual front stereo speaker. And yes, the dynamic vibration thing still exist. This year Xperia XZ3 uses Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back, also still rated IP65/68. You also got 4 colors to choose from Black, White Silver, Bordeaux Red, and Forest Green.

Only the necessary features needed on Xperia XZ3

Sony XZ3 Performance

Like any other smartphone manufacturers, Sony is using Snapdragon 845. Combined with the 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Not only that, Sony even still includes the microSD slot that can support up to 512GB. This should be enough to take the advantage of what this phone’s camera capable of, 4k HDR movie recording, 960fps Full HD super slow-mo, and this year Sony replace their front-facing camera with 13MP. The 19MP main shooter on the back still has the predictive auto-focus also. Since the back of the phone made from glass, it enables Sony to put wireless charging also. Xperia XZ3 runs Android P out-of-the-box and they put the first ever OLED display on their smartphone. They even curved it and put side-sense which can predict what application you will use next for faster interaction. Sony does not tell us who is the supplier for the OLED screen, but based on their previous partnership record, it can be between LG, Samsung or Sharp. The screen also supports HDR10 which is recommended for Netflix. Finally, like any other 2018 trends, Sony has decided to remove the headphone jack. It is not a deal breaker actually, since they still keep the LDAC bluetooth stream which has almost the same high-resolution sound quality.

The heart of Xperia XZ3

Xperia XZ3 Battery Care

There is 3300mah battery who powered the Xperia XZ3 and Sony still gives us the Smart Stamina mode. For you who don’t know about Smart Stamina mode, it is Sony optimized battery-saving features that can predict whether your phone is going to last for a day or not. They still include Qnovo Adaptive Battery charging to monitor your battery performance real-time and battery care function. I feel like this little feature is needed for everyone. Apple should have learnt from Sony about this. Their battery care function that enables smartphone to hold a charge in 90% and top it off to 100% later (see the images on the right). This makes the battery in the smartphone lasts longer. If you are the type of person who use smartphone for more than 2 years. This might be a good features for you.

Conclusion

I feel like the best Sony phone is still Xperia Z3. But after XZ3 released, I am more inclined that this is the best phone. Sony’s decision to put OLED screen on their phone is probably the best decision. As a company that always optimize their phone, I hope they also optimized their OLED screen to mitigate burn-in. In my opinion, Sony phone is underrated by most people. It could be because of their marketing. But they are the best Android with almost similar performance to Vanilla Android and fast update for Android. I still wish Sony has dual camera setup similar to XZ2 Premium though, but it seems that they already toned down the noise reduction algorithm to preserve more detail on the camera.
