Razer just announced their new gaming smartphone. The leader for the gaming smartphone has not changed their focus. Along with the Razer Phone 2 they also announced Razer Raiju Mobile and the new Razer Hammerhead. Basically, they are Razer’s joystick for smartphone and Razer’s in-ear headphone with active-noise cancelling. They also have learnt from their past mistake and its new phone looks promising.
Faster, Better, Stronger Display Performance
The first complaint with the first generation Razer Phone is the display brightness is too low when you are outside. For this year’s phone, they claim that it is 50% brighter and you can crank it up to 645 nits of peak brightness. It is higher than the iPhone Xs display that is only up to 625 nits. It still has QuadHD IGZO panel display, 120Hz refresh rate dubbed as UltraMotion Display, and capable of displaying HDR content, but this year they use Gorilla Glass 5 for stronger display.
Improved Camera Sensors
Razer has similar camera reputation as when OnePlus announced. The first OnePlus phone has a really bad camera. Razer’s first generation phone has 2 bad cameras. I know that their focus is on gaming. However, smartphone is carried everyday, thus they need to upgrade their camera. The new Razer Phone now has jumped from Samsung sensor to Sony IMX sensor. It has the same 12MP f1.75 for wide-angle and f2.6 for telephoto but the wide-angle now has OIS for better stabilization and low-light performance. The camera placement also now is centered above the glowing Razer logo.
Louder and Clearer Dual Front-Facing Stereo Speakers
The first generation of their smartphone has the loudest speaker with Dolby Atmos and THX certification. It is all about the speakers. Razer Phone 2 they just improved on the bass response on the speakers and put in 24-bit USB-C to 3.5mm DAC which is nice since the they don’t have 3.5mm headphone jack anymore. They also announced the new Razer Hammerhead Bluetooth just in case you want wireless option as well but it is not included in the box.
Razer Chroma, IP67 Rating and Wireless Charging
The features that Razer’s fans will be happy to receive this year are those 3 that I mentioned. The logo behind the Razer Phone 2 now is powered by Razer Chroma. You can choose from 16.8 million colors to glow and it will glow when the phone is in use. Other than that, it also can be used for notification light. It can glow red for gmail or green for WhatsApp up to the users.
The new glass design allows the phone to use wireless charging as well. Razer’s wireless charging is hands down the most beautiful wireless charger I have ever seen. It has Chroma Lighting below that can be controlled from your phone. Additionally, you can use this charger either as flat or stand wireless charger.
Water resistant has been important these days. Even Razer’s popular keyboard the Blackwidow has this treatment. It is not surprising that it has IP67 rating, similar to last year’s iPhone. From my point of view, if you won’t be using your phone for diving, IP67 is enough for at least using your phone in the rain.
