The leader of this year’s Android flagship will be Huawei. Yesterday they announced Mate 20 Pro, not to be confused as the successor of P20 Pro. It seems that Huawei wants to compete directly with Apple and jabs Apple several times on their keynote. Other Android manufacturer will mostly wait for the Snapdragon 855 with 7nm processsor, similar to the new iPhone Xs family. However, Huawei has their own chipset Kirin 980, the one that they claim can beat Apple’s A12 Bionic.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro, live up to the ‘Pro’ name
There are some differences between Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro other than the ‘Pro’ name. The Pro has notch similar to iPhone X because Huawei includes the 3D facial recognition sensor similar to FaceID and curved screen similar to Samsung’s screen. On the other hand, the regular Mate 20 has the waterdrop notch and flat screen. Yes, both phones will have little chin at the bottom of the phone. I am starting to wonder, why only Apple able to fold the screen on the OLED regulator and thus remove the chin.
On the screen part, Mate 20 Pro uses OLED while the regular Mate 20 uses LCD. The phones also has fingerprint sensor under the display. It seems a bit overkill by making the phone has notch with 3D facial and having the under display fingerprint sensor as well. Most people will use one or another anyway. I think most people will be delighted if Huawei removes the notch and just have the under display fingerprint sensor.
Mate 20 Pro will have LPDDR4X RAM with 6GB or 8GB configuration, while the regular Mate 20 will have LPDDR4 RAM with 4GB or 6GB configuration. Other than RAM both will have same specification such as 128Gb of storage, gigabit LTE support, faster Wi-Fi, support for 15W wireless charging. For wired charging, the Mate 20 Pro supports up to 40W of fast charge while the other siblings only up to 22W. The battery for Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 are 4,200mAh and 4,000mAh respectively.
Reverse wireless charging
Huawei takes a jab at Apple by enabling the phone to wireless charge other Qi-enabled wireless charging phone or accessories. That means Huawei’s new phone with its gigantic battery can help to wirelessly charge your iPhone. It can be enabled through the setting. This also can help you wirelessly charge your bluetooth headset if you needed to.
Huawei, Samsung, and LG are in the race of adding more lenses
Your phone still has dual-camera? These three brands will laugh at you. LG got V40 that has 3 rear-cameras and 2 front-facing cameras in total 5 cameras, Samsung got A9 with 4 rear-cameras, and now Huawei releases Mate 20 series with 3 rear-cameras. The Mate 20 series has wide-angle camera, standard camera, and telephoto camera configuration. Huawei also seems to get into the AI-race with Apple and Google. Its camera will detect what it is pointing to and adjust the color and setting. It will even also detect if you needed wide-angle camera and switch automatically instead of the standard camera. However, from my point of view, I will disable that feature since I want full control of the camera by myself.
$1,000 price is the new standard
Huawei Mate 20 will not be available on US. But if you convert the price to USD, it will reach near $1,000 price tag for the phone. Considering they have gone all-out on this Mate 20 Pro and make it overkill with 3 cameras, 3D facial recognition, under display fingerprint and 7nm Kirin 980 chipset, fast charger included, Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. I think it is okay to justify the phone to this price this time. However, Huawei will still need to work on EMUI to be more lightweight and more consistent like the Vanilla Android.
